MURIC Urges DSS, Security Agencies to Respect Citizens’ Rights Amid El-Rufai Controversy

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has cautioned the Department of State Services (DSS) and other security agencies against violating the fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens, stressing that all law enforcement actions must strictly adhere to constitutional provisions and due process.

The group’s warning follows recent tensions involving former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and security operatives.

Reports of attempts to detain or question the former governor have sparked widespread debate across the country, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the methods employed by security agencies in carrying out their duties.

In a public statement, MURIC emphasized that while no individual is above the law, investigations and enforcement actions must be conducted in a lawful, transparent, and professional manner. The organization noted that democracy thrives only when institutions operate within clearly defined legal boundaries and citizens’ civil liberties are protected at all times.

According to the group, arbitrary arrests, harassment, or actions perceived as intimidation could erode public trust in security institutions. MURIC therefore called on the DSS and other relevant agencies to ensure that their operations reflect respect for human dignity, fairness, and the rule of law.

The development has further intensified national conversations about the balance between state security and individual freedoms. Legal experts and civil society organizations have reiterated that safeguarding constitutional rights is not optional but a fundamental obligation of every government institution.

As reactions continue to trail the incident, observers say the situation presents an opportunity for security agencies to reinforce public confidence by demonstrating professionalism, accountability, and strict compliance with Nigeria’s legal framework.
