Amaechi to ADC: Choose Credibility Over Identity or Risk Another Defeat in 2027

Former Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, has issued a blunt warning to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), urging the party to abandon ethnic and religious calculations and instead rally behind a credible presidential candidate capable of defeating Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 elections.

Speaking amid growing opposition realignments, Amaechi stressed that Nigeria’s political future cannot be secured through sentiment-driven choices. According to him, the persistent reliance on ethnicity and religion in candidate selection has repeatedly weakened opposition forces, leaving them divided and ineffective against a more coordinated ruling party.

He argued that the ADC and its allies must prioritise competence, national appeal, and electoral strength, warning that anything less would amount to “handing victory to the incumbent.” His remarks reflect increasing concern among opposition leaders that internal divisions not just ruling party dominance pose the greatest threat to their chances in 2027.

Amaechi further called for the building of a broad, strategic coalition, noting that defeating an incumbent president requires more than popularity, it demands unity, discipline, and a shared vision. He cautioned against overconfidence, reminding stakeholders that political power is never “given away” but must be decisively won through planning and consensus.

The statement comes at a time when the ADC is positioning itself as a potential coalition platform for opposition figures seeking to challenge the current administration. However, internal debates over zoning, religion, and regional representation continue to test the party’s cohesion.

Political analysts say Amaechi’s intervention could reshape conversations within the opposition, especially as prominent figures weigh their ambitions. His message is clear: without a unifying and electable candidate, the opposition risks repeating past mistakes fragmentation, weak voter confidence, and ultimately, electoral defeat.

As Nigeria edges closer to another pivotal election cycle, the battle lines are already forming not just between parties, but within them. Whether the ADC heeds this warning may determine whether it emerges as a formidable challenger or remains a divided platform struggling to find direction.
