Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has strongly condemned what he described as a dangerous escalation of political violence after gunmen reportedly attacked a political gathering in Edo State.
The incident occurred in Benin City, where Obi and other political figures were attending a reception.
Shortly after the event, armed men allegedly opened fire in the vicinity and later targeted the residence of former All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, John Odigie-Oyegun. Eyewitness accounts and circulating footage showed bullet marks on the gate and vehicles within the compound, triggering panic among supporters and residents.
Although no casualties were immediately confirmed, the development has sparked nationwide concern over the safety of political actors and the broader implications for democratic engagement in Nigeria.
Reacting after the incident, Obi described the attack as a troubling reflection of the country’s political climate. He warned that increasing violence and intimidation threaten the foundation of democratic governance, where citizens and leaders alike should be free to assemble and express their views without fear.
He called for restraint, tolerance, and respect for the rule of law, stressing that democracy must be protected through peaceful participation and responsible leadership.
The former governor also urged security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted. He maintained that political competition must never devolve into violence, adding that safeguarding democracy requires collective responsibility from leaders, institutions, and citizens.
The attack has drawn condemnation from political stakeholders across party lines, many of whom have called for improved security measures and greater accountability. Authorities are yet to release a comprehensive statement as investigations continue.
