Fresh controversy has erupted in Cross River State after reports revealed that the state government plans to spend ₦2 billion to renovate the governor’s lodge, barely nine months after ₦994 million was reportedly used for similar renovation works on the same facility.

The planned expenditure, which appeared in the state’s 2026 budget, has sparked public criticism and renewed debates about government spending priorities at a time when many residents are grappling with economic hardship and deteriorating public infrastructure.

The governor’s lodge, which serves as the official residence of the state governor, had already undergone renovation in 2025. Records indicate that nearly ₦1 billion was approved and spent on upgrading the facility. However, the latest budget proposal now earmarks an additional ₦2 billion for further renovation, raising questions about the necessity and transparency of the repeated spending.

The development has drawn attention to the administration of Governor Bassey Otu, with critics arguing that the government should focus more on pressing issues such as healthcare, education, road infrastructure, and job creation rather than allocating large sums to renovate government residences.

Civil society groups and public commentators have also called for greater accountability, demanding a clear explanation for why such a massive amount is needed again so soon after the previous renovation. Many argue that the funds could be redirected toward projects that would have a more direct impact on the lives of ordinary citizens.

As economic pressures continue to weigh on households across Nigeria, the situation has further fueled public debate about transparency in governance and the responsible management of public funds.

For many observers, the central question remains: why would a government spend billions renovating the same residence within less than a year? The coming weeks may determine whether authorities provide answers that satisfy a growing chorus of concerned citizens.
