North Korea Fires Multiple Ballistic Missiles After Warning Over U.S.–South Korea Military Drills

North Korea has fired several ballistic missiles shortly after issuing warnings about the ongoing joint military exercises conducted by United States and South Korea. The launches have heightened tensions across the Korean Peninsula, as Pyongyang continues to criticize the drills, describing them as a direct threat to its national security.

According to officials from South Korea and Japan, the missiles were launched toward waters east of the Korean Peninsula, in the area known as the Sea of Japan (also called the East Sea). Authorities said the missiles did not land within Japan’s territorial waters, but defense systems in the region closely monitored the launches to assess their range and trajectory.
The missile tests came shortly after North Korea strongly condemned the joint military exercise known as Freedom Shield.

The annual drills involve large-scale coordination between U.S. and South Korean forces and are intended to strengthen defense preparedness and improve their ability to respond to potential security threats.
However, the government in Pyongyang has repeatedly argued that such exercises are effectively rehearsals for an invasion. In response, North Korea often conducts missile launches or other military demonstrations as a show of force and a warning against what it views as hostile actions.

Security analysts say the latest launches reflect North Korea’s ongoing efforts to advance its missile technology and reinforce its military capabilities. In recent years, the country has significantly accelerated the development of weapons systems, including missiles capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

The new round of missile tests has again raised concerns among neighboring countries and the wider international community. Regional governments continue to monitor the situation closely while calling for restraint and diplomatic engagement to prevent further escalation of tensions on the Korean Peninsula.
