Rising Insecurity in Northern Nigeria Undermines Political Participation, Arewa Spokesperson Warns

Garba Abari, speaking on behalf of the Arewa Consultative Forum, has raised concern over the growing security challenges across northern Nigeria, noting that the crisis is limiting citizens’ ability to engage in politics. He said that for many people in the region, daily survival now takes priority over political involvement.

According to Abari, ongoing threats such as banditry, kidnappings, insurgent attacks, and communal violence have disrupted normal life on a large scale. Communities are increasingly unsafe, forcing residents to abandon farms, businesses, and even their homes. This instability has weakened local economies and displaced many people, adding to the hardship across the region.

He also pointed to the emotional and psychological strain caused by the insecurity. Constant fear and uncertainty have left many people unable to focus on civic responsibilities, including taking part in political discussions, attending campaign events, or preparing for elections. In such conditions, political awareness and participation tend to decline.

Abari warned that the long-term impact could affect Nigeria’s democracy. If citizens remain disengaged due to insecurity, it may lead to low voter turnout, reduced accountability, and weaker representation.

He added that improving security is important not only for protecting lives but also for ensuring that citizens can take part in shaping their future.
