Former Minister of Transportation and ex-Governor of Rivers State, Rotimi Amaechi, has given a detailed account of the circumstances that led to his exit from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the experience as one of the defining moments of his political life.
Amaechi revealed that his departure from the ruling party at the time was not by choice but was the result of mounting pressure and internal conflicts during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan. According to him, the situation was further complicated by the involvement of the former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, whom he accused of playing a role in the events that led to his exit.
Speaking on the political rift, Amaechi explained that disagreements within the party leadership gradually escalated into a crisis. These tensions, he noted, were rooted in struggles over political influence, control of party structures, and differing approaches to governance, particularly in Rivers State.
He recounted how the political environment became increasingly difficult, making it hard for him to function within the party. What began as internal disagreements developed into open confrontation, drawing national attention and deepening divisions within the PDP.
Amaechi stated that despite efforts to manage the situation, the crisis reached a point where remaining in the party was no longer an option. He described his exit as inevitable under the circumstances, saying that the actions of key figures within the administration pushed him out.

Shortly after leaving, Amaechi joined the opposition and became a prominent figure in the coalition that later challenged the ruling party.
