President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised the Nigerian Senate for confirming Christopher Gwabin Musa, a retired general, as the new Minister of Defence.
On Wednesday, following a five-hour screening session, the Senate approved Musa’s nomination by voice vote. Musa, who previously served as Chief of Defence Staff, was nominated after the resignation of his predecessor, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar.
In a letter to the Senate President, Tinubu expressed confidence that Musa’s decades of military experience and prior leadership roles make him the right person to lead the nation’s defence sector.
During his confirmation hearing, Musa pledged to prioritize the safety of Nigerians, strengthen coordination between security agencies, and address ongoing threats from terrorism and banditry. He emphasized the importance of a holistic security approach that combines military action with community engagement, improved infrastructure for schools, and better intelligence sharing.
The Senate President described the confirmation as timely, given the current security challenges facing the country. With Musa’s appointment, expectations are high that the government will accelerate efforts to restore peace, secure borders, and protect vulnerable communities.
