The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared Friday, February 20, 2026, a work-free day across the territory in preparation for the forthcoming Area Council elections. The directive is aimed at enabling residents to travel to their respective communities and make adequate preparations to participate in the polls scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026.

In addition to the public holiday, the FCT Administration has announced a restriction of movement throughout Abuja and surrounding councils. The restriction will take effect from 8:00 p.m. on Friday and remain in place until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. During this period, vehicular and non-essential movement will be prohibited, except for individuals on essential duties, including electoral officials, security personnel, and emergency service providers.

The decision is part of broader efforts to ensure a peaceful, orderly, and credible electoral process across the six Area Councils — Abuja Municipal, Bwari, Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abaji, and Kwali. Authorities say the measures are necessary to maintain security, prevent disruptions, and create an enabling environment for voters to exercise their civic responsibilities without fear or interference.

The move has reportedly received the approval of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with security agencies directed to enforce the movement restriction strictly. Residents have been urged to comply fully with the directive and to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the election period.

The FCT Administration also called on eligible voters to turn out in large numbers and contribute to strengthening grassroots democracy through active participation in the Area Council elections.
