In a decisive and forward-thinking initiative, Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has announced an impressive increase in the minimum wage for state civil servants, raising it to N85,000. This new standard mirrors a similar announcement by Lagos State, thereby positioning Rivers as one of the most worker-friendly states in Nigeria. The historic announcement followed a high-level, closed-door meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt, which was attended by key stakeholders from the Joint Public Service Negotiating Councils.

Dr. George Nwaeke, the Head of Civil Service in Rivers State, officially confirmed this progressive development. He highlighted that the newly approved wage, which exceeds the current national standard, is set to come into effect from November 2024. Nwaeke emphasized that this decision showcases the government’s unwavering dedication to enhancing the welfare and livelihood of its workforce, marking a landmark achievement for civil servants across Rivers State. Furthermore, a specialized technical committee has been established, co-chaired by Nwaeke in his role as Deputy to the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), to address any outstanding wage arrears and ensure the seamless execution of this new wage policy.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State, Alex Agwanwor, expressed deep appreciation for Governor Fubara’s dynamic and progressive leadership. He pointed out that, despite the clear differences in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) between Rivers and Lagos, the governor’s decision to implement the same N85,000 wage demonstrates a profound commitment to the well-being and prosperity of the state’s workforce. Agwanwor reiterated the union’s unwavering support, describing Governor Fubara as the “Champion of Labour” and the “Most Labour-Friendly Governor in Nigeria.” He also assured that the labor unions would maintain a strong and cooperative relationship with the administration throughout the governor’s tenure, endorsing his leadership and vision.

Governor Fubara’s announcement comes at a critical juncture when several state governments are engaged in discussions regarding the recent directive from the federal government to raise the national minimum wage to N70,000. By setting the bar even higher at N85,000, Rivers State has not only affirmed its commitment to its civil servants but has also established itself as a frontrunner in implementing progressive labor policies. This decision ensures a motivated, well-compensated workforce and sets a commendable precedent for other states to follow.
