Enugu, Nigeria — June 9, 2025

The First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, CON, has officially concluded the nationwide distribution of professional kits to midwives, marking the final phase of the initiative with a grand event in Enugu State, the capital of the South East geopolitical zone.

As part of her two-day working visit to the state, Senator Tinubu—under the auspices of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI)—oversaw the presentation of 10,000 professional kits, comprising medical scrubs and Crocs, to midwives across the South East region. The initiative is aimed at improving maternal healthcare delivery and ensuring a more supportive working environment for frontline healthcare providers.

Her Excellency was received by Chief Barr. (Dr.) Chioma Uzodimma, FIMC, CMC, First Lady of Imo State and Secretary of the RHI, along with RHI state coordinators, dignitaries, and healthcare stakeholders. The event was a resounding display of inter-state solidarity for the advancement of women’s health and empowerment.

During a courtesy visit to traditional rulers in Enugu, the First Lady emphasized their critical role in community leadership. She appealed to them to support public health campaigns against cervical cancer, tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, and Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Senator Tinubu described traditional rulers as the “eyes and ears of government at the grassroots”, calling on them to become advocates for healthier communities.

Speaking at the kit presentation ceremony, Senator Tinubu expressed deep satisfaction at the successful implementation of the project across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. She reaffirmed her commitment to advancing quality healthcare and gender-sensitive policies, which are cornerstones of the Renewed Hope Initiative.

Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah of Enugu State, in his goodwill message, praised the First Lady for her tireless efforts in health advocacy. He described her as “the Florence Nightingale of our time,” applauding her deep compassion and practical action in addressing health challenges. He also commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritizing healthcare reform as a pillar of national development.

A major highlight of the visit was the presentation of a ₦50 million Business Re-capitalization Grant to 1,000 women petty traders in Enugu State. The empowerment scheme, also under the RHI, is part of a broader strategy to support micro-businesses, boost grassroots economies, and enhance financial independence among Nigerian women.

In her closing remarks, Chief Barr. (Dr.) Chioma Uzodimma reiterated the commitment of the RHI and her own organization, the Goodhope Women Flourish Initiative (GHWFI), to continue empowering women across all spheres—health, business, and community leadership.
