Sorrow in Imo: Youths Protest After Okada Rider Is Allegedly Killed by Police at Zion Ministry

by admin

A wave of sorrow and anger swept through Ngor Okpala in Imo State following the alleged killing of a young commercial motorcyclist by a police officer reportedly attached to the Zion Prayer Movement Outreach, led by Evangelist Ebuka Obi.

The victim, described by locals as a peaceful and hardworking man, was reportedly shot dead on Monday night while returning home from work. The incident allegedly involved officers assigned to provide security at the Zion Ministry’s headquarters, which is based in the community.

In the early hours of Tuesday, hundreds of outraged youths staged a massive protest. In a dramatic show of grief and resistance, they carried the victim’s corpse to the premises of the Zion Ministry, demanding justice and immediate accountability from the police.

According to residents, the deceased had no history of criminal activity and was well known in the area. Community members described the killing as unprovoked and called it a clear example of the rising problem of police brutality in Nigeria.

The protest, marked by chants and emotional speeches, was peaceful but deeply charged with sorrow. Protesters condemned the presence of armed police officers within religious institutions and called on authorities to investigate the circumstances that led to the shooting.

A video capturing the moment the body was laid at the church premises quickly went viral on social media, sparking public outrage and renewing calls for police reform and justice for victims of extrajudicial killings.

Efforts to reach the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, were unsuccessful at the time of this report, as calls and text messages went unanswered.

The community of Ngor Okpala continues to demand a full investigation, warning that silence or inaction from authorities could further erode trust in the police and ignite further unrest.

The tragedy adds to the growing list of alleged police abuses in the country, intensifying calls for accountability, reform, and an end to unchecked violence by law enforcement agents.
