Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo has warned local authorities and market officials against any form of illegal taxation on low-income earners in Anambra State. This follows reports of extortion during his recent visit to the Eke-Awgbu market in Orumba North.

The Governor, who introduced the tax exemption policy three years ago, expressed disappointment that some people continue to violate it. The policy was put in place to ease the burden on petty traders, barrow pushers, small artisans, and individuals whose business capital is below ₦100,000.

During his visit, traders shared accounts of harassment and illegal levies by individuals claiming to act on behalf of local authorities. Governor Soludo said immediate disciplinary action was taken and warned that any further breach of the policy would not be tolerated.

He said people already struggling with daily survival should not be subjected to further hardship by those in power.

Soludo restated that in Anambra State, there are no taxes or levies on petty traders, barrow pushers, and others operating with small capital. He said the law is still in place and anyone found breaking it will face serious consequences.

He also called on community leaders, market unions, and security agents to ensure that this directive is respected across all parts of the state. According to him, government should be a source of support for the poor, not a source of added suffering.

He ended by stating that more checks will be carried out in local markets and rural areas to make sure the policy is being followed.
