The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has granted a temporary release to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, on compassionate grounds, enabling him to attend the burial of his late mother.
His mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, passed away after a brief illness in Cairo, Egypt. In consideration of the circumstances, the anti-corruption agency approved his release strictly for humanitarian purposes, allowing him to be present for the funeral and final rites.
El-Rufai has been in ICPC custody since February 2026 over allegations of money laundering, abuse of office, and the unlawful receipt of public funds. He has already appeared in court and pleaded not guilty to the charges, with legal proceedings still ongoing.
The Commission emphasized that the release is temporary and granted under specific conditions, though these terms have not been made public. He is expected to return to custody after the burial as the case against him continues.
This move reflects the ICPC’s balance between enforcing accountability and acknowledging compassionate considerations within the bounds of the law.
