The Federal Government has successfully secured the release of six Nigerian citizens who had been detained in Côte d’Ivoire since October 2025, following months of sustained diplomatic engagement.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government disclosed that the six Nigerians were arrested over alleged economic and financial-related offences. Four of the detainees regained their freedom on June 22, 2026, while the remaining two were released a day later, on June 23.

The ministry attributed the successful outcome to the relentless efforts of the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan, led by Ambassador Nwabiola C. Ezenwa. Embassy officials maintained regular consular access to the detainees, monitored their welfare, and held continuous discussions with Ivorian authorities, ultimately securing their release.

The Federal Government also expressed appreciation to the Government of Côte d’Ivoire for its cooperation throughout the process, describing the development as a reflection of the strong diplomatic ties and mutual respect shared by both countries.

Reaffirming its commitment to protecting Nigerians abroad, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs urged citizens living and travelling overseas to respect the laws of their host countries and remain in close contact with the nearest Nigerian diplomatic mission for support whenever necessary.

The successful release underscores Nigeria’s continued commitment to safeguarding the rights and welfare of its citizens abroad through dialogue, diplomacy, and effective consular services.
