Although several policies, legislations and intervention mechanisms have been introduced to address the injustice against oil-producing communities, implementation has remained a major challenge.
The 13 percent derivation principle, the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) 2021 and other intervention frameworks were established to promote development and address the peculiar needs of oil-bearing communities.
Sadly, the expected impact of these initiatives is yet to be adequately felt in many parts of Ohaji/Egbema and other oil-producing areas in Imo State.
One major reason for this unfortunate situation has been the inability of some political representatives and leaders to provide strong advocacy and effective representation for the people. There has been a visible gap between the needs of the people and the level of legislative engagement required to attract meaningful development. This has left many residents feeling abandoned despite the abundance of natural resources in their land.
However, with Prince Marcel Amadioha emerging as the APC candidate for the Ohaji/Egbema State Constituency, there is now renewed optimism that things can change for the better.
