Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched the Community Food Bank Programme for the North-West region, describing it as a major step towards tackling food insecurity and malnutrition among vulnerable households.

Speaking at the launch in Hadejia, Jigawa State, the First Lady said the initiative supports the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by promoting food security, improving healthcare, and strengthening social welfare.

She commended Governor Umar Namadi for his administration’s development efforts and expressed confidence in Jigawa’s ability to successfully implement the programme. Citing the early success of the initiative in Borno State, where hundreds of vulnerable women and children have already benefited, she urged governments, development partners, and stakeholders to support its expansion across the North-West.

Governor Umar Namadi described the programme as a timely intervention to improve access to food for vulnerable families and pledged the full support of North-West governors to ensure its success. He also highlighted Jigawa’s achievements in child nutrition through the MASAKI Nutrition Programme, which has screened hundreds of thousands of children and significantly increased recovery rates from moderate acute malnutrition.

The Community Food Bank Programme is expected to strengthen food support systems, improve nutrition, and enhance the well-being of vulnerable communities across the region.
