The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on Nigerians to embrace national unity and demand the effective implementation of government policies as the country marks Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the Lenten season.
In its Ash Wednesday message, CAN encouraged citizens and leaders to use the solemn period of Lent as a time for deep reflection—not only on spiritual matters but also on the state of the nation. The association emphasized that the 40-day season of prayer, fasting, and repentance leading up to Easter provides an opportunity for both personal and collective renewal.
CAN stressed that Nigeria’s progress depends largely on unity across ethnic, religious, and political divides. It urged Nigerians to set aside differences and work together in the interest of peace, stability, and national development. According to the association, genuine unity is essential for overcoming the country’s security, economic, and social challenges.
The Christian body also called on government officials at all levels to move beyond policy formulation and focus on practical implementation that directly improves the lives of citizens. It noted that well-crafted policies must translate into visible results, particularly in areas such as economic growth, job creation, infrastructure development, and public safety.
Furthermore, CAN reminded leaders of their responsibility to govern with integrity, transparency, and accountability. It urged them to demonstrate compassion and prioritize the welfare of the people, especially the vulnerable and disadvantaged.
The association concluded by encouraging Nigerians to use the Lenten season as a time to recommit to justice, love, sacrifice, and service to the nation. It expressed hope that through collective effort, sincere leadership, and a shared vision for progress, Nigeria can move toward greater stability and prosperity.
