The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has issued a strong public warning about the growing circulation of counterfeit toothpaste products falsely branded as Colgate-Palmolive in Nigerian markets. The agency described the development as a serious public health concern, urging consumers to remain vigilant when purchasing everyday personal care items.
According to NAFDAC, investigations uncovered several unregistered toothpaste products designed to imitate the Colgate brand. Some of these counterfeits bear misleading labels such as “Coglaet,” a deliberate misspelling intended to deceive unsuspecting buyers. These products have been found in circulation through informal and unauthorized distribution channels, including roadside vendors and door-to-door sales agents.
The agency emphasized that these fake products have not undergone any regulatory approval or safety checks. As a result, their ingredients, manufacturing conditions, and overall quality remain unknown, posing potential health risks to consumers. Prolonged use of such products could lead to oral health complications or exposure to harmful substances.
NAFDAC has already begun enforcement actions, including the seizure and removal of the counterfeit toothpaste from affected markets. Surveillance efforts have also been intensified nationwide to track down distributors and prevent further spread. The agency reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that only certified products are available to Nigerians.
Consumers are advised to exercise caution by carefully inspecting product packaging before purchase. Key things to look out for include correct spelling of brand names, the presence of a valid NAFDAC registration number, and overall packaging quality. Buying from reputable stores and avoiding suspiciously cheap products or unverified sellers can significantly reduce the risk of purchasing counterfeit goods.
This warning serves as a reminder that counterfeit consumer products remain a persistent issue. Staying informed and alert is essential to avoiding health risks and supporting efforts to eliminate fake goods from the market.
