The newly introduced Agricultural revolution which gears towards increasing farm output for food sufficiency through Genetically Modified Organisms,GMO, has gained more momentum as Young Farmers Association in conjunction with Global Initiative for Youth Advancement for Peace in Nigeria and Students of Agriculture, Biotechnology, Biochemistry and Microbiology from Federal University of Technology Owerri,FUTO, match the city of Owerri the Imo State Capital calling on people mostly farmers to cue into the advance agricultural methodology to curtail food insecurity.
The groups advocated for public acceptance of the new science prove farming process for healthy living.
Speaking during the awareness campaign, the Secretary,Young Farmers Association, Imo State Chapter, Raymond James said that the reason for awareness is to dispel false rumour been spread against GMO and call for general acceptance of the new method of agricultural production.
He maintained that every crop that passed GMO process is qualified to be suitable for human consumption with its nutritional varieties.
The Chairman of the Young Farmers Association regretted that people who don’t know the value of GMO are spreading non existential danger against its practice and call on farmers to begin accepting the method for increase in farm production.
John informed that many African countries have started applying the process except Nigeria which he said is yet to know the benefits inherit in it.
He remarked that any crop that passed GMO test is good for human consumption as it has the potency of removing cancerous elements in the human body.
“Those behind the false alarm against GMO don’t have verifiable facts to prove their points.
The GMO is science prove with verifiable and reliable facts.
“Most of the crops in our markets today have been genetically modified.
The tomatoes that we consume today are genetically edited leading to its increase in size.” he said.
A Lecturer of Micro Biology, John Ifeanyi Uzokpor said that GMO is acceptable all over the world as new device of crop processing to attain desired results.
Uzokpor maintained that with GMO fertilized agricultural products which he said are cancerous will be discouraged.
He added that it is a new agriculture initiative that increase longevity of crops during long dry season and not harmful to human anatomy as he called on farmers in the State to embrace it for achieving bumber harvest.
Speaking on behalf of the students, southeast president of Nigeria Youth Vanguard, Esther Udoamaka said as science Students that they are saying yes to GMO for food security.
She noted that a lot of errors are going on in the agricultural sector and that with GMO it can be corrected.
