The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is set to arraign 23 individuals accused of internet-related fraud following their recent arrest at a hotel located within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The arraignment is scheduled for Friday, 15 August 2025, before Justice Deinde Dipeolu of the Federal High Court in Ikoyi, Lagos. The suspects, part of a larger group of 93 people taken into custody, face charges including impersonation, identity theft, and various forms of online fraud.
According to EFCC officials, the group was apprehended during a pool party that had originally been planned at two separate venues in Abeokuta. Upon learning of possible enforcement action, the organizers reportedly moved the gathering to the OOPL hotel, mistakenly believing the location would shield them from law enforcement scrutiny.
Investigators said that profiling of the suspects revealed strong links to internet scams, with many allegedly confessing to their involvement. The OOPL management, while clarifying that the library itself was not under investigation, expressed displeasure over the incident and has signaled possible legal action against the EFCC for the manner in which the operation was conducted.
This case adds to the EFCC’s growing list of high-profile arrests targeting so-called “Yahoo boys” and underscores the agency’s determination to clamp down on cybercrime, which remains a significant concern in Nigeria’s fight against financial and economic offenses.
