Lawyers for Nnamdi Kanu Complain about Not Seeing Him and Losing Papers to Nigerian Secret Police, DSS

by admin

Kanu has been kept by the Department of State Services (DSS) since he was brought from Kenya to Nigeria in June 2021.

The legal team led by Lawyer Aloy Ejimakor raised concerns in a talk, saying the DSS always stops them from meeting Kanu and takes all their legal papers.

According to the attorneys, the DSS staff scan and copy the papers and often don’t give them back.

Kanu’s right as per Section 36(6) paragraph C of the Constitution has been broken.

In a talk, one of Kanu’s lawyers, Lawyer Jude Ugwuanyi said, “We are ready to defend Nnamdi Kanu. The crimes he is accused of have defenses. We have good defenses but we are worried about not seeing him.

“As lawyers, we should meet our client, Nnamdi Kanu, talk with him, and hear what defenses he has against those crimes.

“But every time we try to see him, the DSS stops us. I have experienced it.

“The accusations against Nnamdi Kanu are about him and only he can tell us what he did or didn’t do and what defenses he has.

“That’s why Section 36(6) paragraph c says he can choose his lawyer.

“We want to hear from him and get his defenses because we weren’t there when he did those things. But we can’t.”

Ugwuanyi also said, “If we take papers to him to hear his thoughts, the DSS takes them from us. They copy them and we might not get them back.

“If we have something from the crimes and want Kanu’s thoughts, we can’t take them to him. They take them and if we want to write, they limit us.

“These things go against what the constitution says he should get. That’s our worry. If we can’t see him or get papers, or even get him to sign papers for a change of lawyer, it’s not fair.

“When two sides are fighting a case and one has an advantage, it’s not fair. This kind of trial doesn’t happen in other countries.”
