Tension in Abuja as Armed Police Barricade PDP Headquarters, Halt BoT and NEC Meetings

by admin

Political tension heightened in Nigeria’s capital on Monday as heavily armed police officers took over Wadata Plaza, the national headquarters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effectively blocking key leadership meetings from taking place.

The security operatives, who were deployed early in the morning, prevented members of the PDP’s Board of Trustees (BoT) and National Executive Committee (NEC) from entering the premises. The BoT was scheduled to hold a critical meeting ahead of a broader NEC and expanded caucus session. These meetings were expected to address pressing issues affecting the party’s leadership structure and 2027 election preparations.

Eyewitnesses at the scene confirmed that armed officers were stationed at all strategic entrances of the party secretariat, turning back even the most senior party figures. Maina Chiroma, a prominent BoT member, was among those denied access. Former PDP National Secretary, Umar Tsauri, stated that the police claimed to be acting on “orders from above,” though no official reason was provided for the unprecedented security clampdown.

Initially, some staff members of the PDP secretariat were allowed into the building, but they were later instructed to leave by the armed officers. Journalists who had arrived to cover the meetings were also ordered to vacate the premises, with law enforcement sealing off the surrounding Dalaba Street, further escalating the situation.

The abrupt and forceful disruption has raised serious concerns over potential political interference and attempts to destabilize Nigeria’s leading opposition party. While the motives behind the security operation remain unclear, speculation is growing that it may be connected to deepening internal divisions within the PDP and growing anxiety over future electoral strategies.

The halted meetings were expected to tackle unresolved disputes over the party’s national leadership, zoning formulas, and internal reconciliation. Party insiders have described the incident as a direct attack on democratic processes and an alarming escalation in Nigeria’s political environment.

As of the time of filing this report, the PDP leadership had yet to issue an official statement, and there was no public comment from the Nigeria Police Force regarding the legality or origin of the directive.
