Nigerian activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, on Tuesday honoured an invitation by the Nigeria Police Force at its headquarters in Abuja, following allegations he has dismissed as baseless and politically motivated.
The invitation, issued by the IGP Monitoring Unit, initially accused Sowore of “inciting disturbance” under a non-existent section of Nigerian law. Following public scrutiny, the police quietly amended the charge to “forgery and criminal defamation,” but reportedly failed to provide any legal documentation or disclose the identity of the complainant.
Sowore, who initially rejected the invitation due to legal irregularities, later agreed to appear but called on supporters to accompany him, framing the incident as another example of harassment against dissenting voices in Nigeria.
His arrival at the Force Headquarters was marked by peaceful protests from fellow activists. As of the time of filing this report, no formal charges have been announced by the police.
According to Sahara Reporters, this development adds to a growing list of confrontations between Sowore and Nigerian authorities, raising concerns over the targeting of journalists and pro-democracy activists.
