Mbaitoli Local Government the largest in Imo State by size and population is fast becoming a textbook case of squandered opportunity and governance failure. Under the watch of Chairman Hon. Ifunanya Nwanegwo, residents have endured ten months of worsening infrastructure decay, collapsing public services, and a troubling absence of transparency in how public funds are managed.
Official FAAC figures for June 2025 show Mbaitoli received ₦529,087,916.07 in a single month, the highest allocation among all LGAs in Imo. In less than one year, the council has taken in well over ₦5 billion. Yet the reality on the ground tells a very different story: health centres remain poorly equipped, schools are crumbling, and the roads have turned into dangerous traps for motorists and pedestrians alike.
Rather than seeing transformational projects, the people are treated to public fanfare over the repair of a single 300KVA transformer a routine maintenance task exaggerated as though it were a landmark achievement. Such theatrics insult the intelligence of the very people whose resources are at stake.
The lack of visible infrastructure development, youth empowerment initiatives, or employment opportunities raises unavoidable questions about whether these funds are being used as intended. Public money is a sacred trust not a personal asset and must be tracked to the last kobo.
We therefore call on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately invite Hon. Ifunanya Nwanegwo for questioning. A full forensic audit of all FAAC disbursements to Mbaitoli is overdue. Expenditure records must be examined in detail, and anyone found culpable of mismanaging or diverting public funds must face the full weight of the law.
Mbaitoli deserves leadership that is accountable, transparent, and committed to genuine development. The time for silence has passed the people must rise, demand answers, and insist that every naira be used for the good of the community.
