As the festive season approaches, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has assured residents and indigenes in the diaspora that the state is safe and secure for Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Speaking during a media briefing in Awka, CP Orutugu expressed confidence in the current security situation of the state, saying that Anambra has witnessed great improvement in law enforcement operations and community cooperation in recent months.
He said Anambra is safe for Christmas and that the police have worked tirelessly to restore peace and ensure that people can return home without fear. He called on all Anambra sons and daughters to come home and celebrate with their loved ones.
The Commissioner explained that the peaceful conduct of the recent gubernatorial election in the state is proof of the improved security atmosphere. According to him, the success of the election showed the effectiveness of the joint security strategies deployed across different communities.
CP Orutugu said several key measures have been put in place to maintain peace and order during the festive period. These include visible policing, intelligence-led patrols, and rapid response units positioned across major roads and border communities. He added that the Police Command is working closely with traditional rulers, youth groups, religious leaders, and community vigilante groups to improve intelligence sharing and strengthen public trust.
He stated that the command has increased police presence at all known flashpoints and designed operational strategies for quick response to any emergency. He also warned officers to maintain professionalism and avoid any form of extortion or misconduct.
The Police Chief assured residents and visitors that measures are in place to protect lives and property, especially in markets, transport terminals, and recreational centers expected to witness large gatherings during the holidays. He urged citizens to cooperate with law enforcement officers and report any suspicious activity immediately.
CP Orutugu also advised travelers to remain vigilant and follow basic safety measures such as traveling during the day, avoiding isolated roads, and informing family members about their movements.
Many residents and business owners have welcomed the assurance from the Police Command, saying it will boost confidence and encourage more people to return home for the celebrations. The positive security outlook is also expected to stimulate business and tourism activities in the state during the festive season.
