A significant political realignment occurred in the Imo State House of Assembly on Thursday, March 5, 2026, as two lawmakers officially defected from their respective parties to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), further strengthening the ruling party’s majority in the legislature.
The defecting lawmakers are Clinton Amadi, who represents Owerri Municipal and was elected on the platform of the Labour Party, and Princewill Amuchie, the lawmaker representing Aboh Mbaise, who was elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Before their defection, Amadi served as the Deputy Minority Leader of the House, while Amuchie held the position of Minority Leader. Their decision to switch political allegiance was formally announced during plenary by the Speaker of the House, Chike Olemgbe.
The Speaker disclosed that the lawmakers attributed their decision to the leadership style and developmental efforts of the Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodimma, which they said inspired their move to align with the ruling party.
The announcement sparked excitement within the chamber, as members of the Assembly welcomed the lawmakers with applause and celebratory songs, describing the move as a major boost for the APC.
Following the defection, both lawmakers expressed satisfaction with their decision and pledged to work closely with the APC-led administration to support policies and programs aimed at advancing development in Imo State.
With this latest development, the APC now controls 27 seats in the Imo State House of Assembly, further consolidating its legislative strength and political influence.
