The Nigerian Army has buried 12 personnel who were killed during counter-insurgency operations in Borno State. The burial ceremony took place at the Maimalari Military Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri and was attended by military officials, government representatives, and grieving families of the fallen soldiers.
According to reports, the deceased included three lieutenant colonels and nine other soldiers who lost their lives in separate encounters with insurgents during ongoing security operations in the state.
The solemn ceremony was conducted with full military honours. In line with the religious beliefs of the fallen personnel, nine soldiers were buried according to Islamic rites, while the remaining three received Christian burial services.
During the ceremony, former Maina Maaji Lawan, a former governor of Borno State, reportedly collapsed after becoming overwhelmed with emotion.
Those present quickly attended to him, and he later regained consciousness after being given water.
The tragedy highlights the continued sacrifices made by members of the Nigerian military in the fight against insurgency in the northeastern region of the country.
