Governments of the southeastern part of the country have been enjoined to partner with Surveyors in the region towards finding lasting solutions to the insecurity ravaging the the area. This, as gathered by our reporter, would help bring back security, peace and development which had eluded the region in the recent past owning to the violent and criminal activities of some human elements.

Making this call was Surv. High Chief Peters Nwokocha, while expressing regrets that insecurity has negatively affected most of the socio-economic and political activities in the region once esteemed for its commercial prowess. According to him, ending insecurity in Nigeria and especially in the South-East and bringing back normalcy should be the concern of every patriotic citizen.

Nwokocha, a private surveying practitioner and the Managing Director, Rock Surveys Ltd, Owerri, gave the charge at the 2nd Annual General Meeting of the Eastern Surveyors Forum (ESF)/Surv. S. G. Wokemba Memorial Lecture, at the NIS Imo State Secretariat off Port-Harcourt Road, Owerri, recently. He disclosed this while reacting to the topic of the lecture: “The Role of Surveying in Fighting Insecurity in South Eastern Region of Nigeria” delivered by Surv. Prof. Francis Okeke of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (Enugu Campus).

He stated: “All of us who live in Nigeria know the wreck insecurity has caused in our environment, and put all of us in a very big mess that we cannot move forward in so many things like business, agriculture, tourism and all that. And there is no patriotic person who lives here or group that would not encourage anyone or profession with solutions to come up to end insecurity for us to ameliorate the situation and save our society from this high-level of insecurity we find within the system.

“So, having a programme like this with this wonderful theme that teaches Surveyors themselves, and brings awareness to the governments of the day on how Surveyors can come in to help fight insecurity in the country and South-East is worthwhile.” He used the medium to encourage the governments of the South-East to leverage the opportunity and work out synergy with Surveyors and other statutory security agencies to achieve collective victory over insecurity, arguing that no sacrifice was too much to restore peace.

“Our governors in the South-East should be up to work in synergy with Surveyors and security agencies. Good a thing, the Deputy Governor of Imo State was in this programme. And the governor himself is a very high player within the South-East leadership echelon, both in his party, the APC, and in the forum of the governors of the South-East as a whole. When you pass a message through him to the governments of the South-East, be sure that message would reach the target.

“From the outcome of this event, we are expectant and optimistic that what we have discussed, including solutions to end insecurity would definitely go to those are in-charge of leadership in the South-East,” he solicited, while encouraging surveying practitioners to always uphold ethics and professionalism, while counseling members of the public to assist in maintaining standards by not engaging the services of quacks.

Very profound. We need everyone in all sectors of the Nigerian economy to join hands in the fight against insecurity and the body of surveyors are much included. God bless Nigeria. I thank Surv. High Chief Peters Nwokocha for making this call.
