The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has directed all contractors handling federal projects to remain on site throughout the Yuletide season, signaling the government’s determination to sustain momentum on critical infrastructure works across the country.

In the same move, the minister cancelled holiday leave for key directors within the ministry to ensure close supervision and accountability during the festive period.
According to the directive, construction sites—particularly those linked to major highways and ongoing rehabilitation projects—must not be shut down for the holidays.

The minister emphasized that uninterrupted work is necessary to meet project timelines and to reduce the inconvenience faced by road users, especially during a season known for heavy travel.

Umahi stressed that the decision was taken in the public interest, noting that improved road conditions would enhance safety, ease transportation, and support economic activities during and after the festive season. He also warned contractors against unnecessary delays, stating that performance would be closely monitored and sanctions applied where expectations are not met.

By cancelling holidays for senior officials, the ministry aims to strengthen oversight and ensure that contractors comply fully with project specifications and deadlines. The move underscores the government’s broader commitment to infrastructure development and its resolve to deliver quality projects efficiently, even during traditionally slow periods.

Observers say the directive reflects a results-driven approach and could significantly accelerate the completion of key road projects, bringing lasting benefits to commuters and the national economy.
