The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a strong warning about the state of Nigeria’s democracy, alleging that the country’s electoral process is under threat due to perceived bias within critical institutions. The party specifically pointed fingers at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), urging it and other democratic bodies to uphold strict neutrality as the nation prepares for the 2027 general elections.
According to the PDP, the credibility of any election rests heavily on the independence and transparency of institutions responsible for its conduct. The party expressed concern that any form of partiality or external influence could erode public confidence and weaken democratic foundations. It emphasized that Nigeria’s electoral system must not only be fair but must also be seen as fair by the electorate.
Expanding on its concerns, the PDP stressed the importance of leveraging technology to ensure credible elections. It argued that systems such as electronic transmission of results should be implemented without compromise, noting that any technical failures or “glitches” in future elections would raise serious questions about transparency and accountability. The party maintained that Nigeria already possesses the capacity to deliver seamless, technology-driven elections if there is genuine commitment from electoral authorities.
The party also warned that legislative or procedural adjustments that dilute electoral safeguards could open the door to manipulation. It called on all arms of government, security agencies, and electoral officials to act in accordance with the law and resist any form of political pressure that could undermine the democratic process.
Ultimately, the PDP framed its warning as a call to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy. It urged stakeholders across the political spectrum to prioritize national interest over partisan considerations, insisting that the success of the 2027 elections will depend on the collective resolve to ensure fairness, transparency, and accountability at every stage of the electoral process.
