The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, Benue State, Wilfred Anagbe, has called on President Donald Trump of the United States to back Washington’s renewed designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern with decisive and measurable action. The Bishop said the renewed listing would carry real weight only if it is followed by concrete steps aimed at addressing the worsening insecurity and targeted attacks affecting communities across the country.

Bishop Anagbe noted that many parts of Nigeria, especially the Middle Belt, continue to experience persistent violence, killings, and displacement, with innocent citizens bearing the greatest burden. He stressed that the CPC designation should not remain a symbolic gesture, but should instead serve as a catalyst for stronger international intervention, improved humanitarian assistance, and greater accountability for those responsible for widespread atrocities.

The cleric called on the United States government to deepen its engagement with Nigeria by supporting security reforms, strengthening human rights monitoring, and ensuring that aid reaches communities that have been devastated by attacks. According to him, thousands of families in Benue and neighboring states are struggling to survive after losing their homes, farmlands, and livelihoods to violent assaults.

Bishop Anagbe emphasized that global powers have a moral duty to act when vulnerable populations face continuous threats. He urged the international community not to ignore the suffering of Nigerians who live daily in fear and uncertainty, adding that meaningful action from the United States could help turn the tide against the violence ravaging many regions.

The Bishop expressed hope that the renewed CPC designation will open the door to stronger diplomatic pressure, broader cooperation, and comprehensive strategies aimed at restoring peace and stability in Nigeria.
