Senate President Godswill Akpabio has stated that Ibadan State remains the most prominent and widely supported proposal among ongoing calls for the creation of new states in Nigeria.
Speaking on the issue of state creation, Akpabio noted that while there are several demands from different parts of the country, the push for Ibadan State appears to be driven by strong popular support and historical considerations. According to him, this distinguishes the proposal from many others currently before the National Assembly.
Akpabio explained that the Senate is aware of the long standing agitations surrounding Ibadan and its neighbouring areas, stressing that such demands cannot be ignored in a democratic system. However, he clarified that no new state has been officially approved, as the constitutional process for state creation is rigorous and requires broad national consensus.
The Senate President emphasised that any proposal for state creation must strictly follow constitutional provisions, including approvals from state assemblies, the National Assembly and other required stakeholders. He added that public discussions and legislative scrutiny are essential before any final decision can be reached.
While Akpabio remarks have renewed hope among supporters of Ibadan State, analysts note that the journey toward creating a new state remains complex.
For now, Ibadan State stands as the proposal most openly acknowledged by the Senate President as reflecting significant popular demand, even as the debate over state creation continues nationwide.
