Four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have reversed their earlier stance and rejoined the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Professor Ngozi Odu, reigniting momentum for the controversial process.

The lawmakers had previously distanced themselves from the impeachment move, urging their colleagues to embrace dialogue and political reconciliation. However, in a fresh development, they announced that they were returning to the process, citing what they described as the governor’s failure to engage meaningfully with the legislature or address the issues raised.

Speaking at a press briefing in Port Harcourt, the legislators maintained that the impeachment exercise remains constitutional and necessary. They accused the executive arm of disregarding calls for peace and allegedly undermining the authority of the House of Assembly, leaving lawmakers with little choice but to pursue constitutional remedies.

Their decision to recant has strengthened the impeachment bloc within the Assembly, which has since renewed its appeal to the Chief Judge of Rivers State to set up a panel to investigate the allegations against the governor and his deputy.

The renewed push has further heightened political tensions in Rivers State, as the rift between the executive and the legislature deepens. Stakeholders across the state continue to watch closely as the unfolding events may significantly shape the political direction of the state in the coming days.
