The Senate has stated that it is not opposed to public criticism or peaceful demonstrations concerning its handling of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. This position was made clear on Monday amid growing public discourse and civic engagement surrounding the proposed legislation.
According to the Senate, constructive criticism and peaceful protests are fundamental elements of a democratic society and should not be viewed as acts of hostility. The lawmakers emphasized that citizens have the constitutional right to express their opinions and concerns, especially on matters that directly affect the electoral process and democratic governance.
The Senate further explained that public feedback plays an important role in strengthening legislation and ensuring transparency in lawmaking. It reassured the public that such expressions, when carried out peacefully and within the bounds of the law, would not deter the legislature from engaging with stakeholders or reviewing national issues objectively.
However, the Senate also urged protesters and commentators to remain peaceful and responsible in their actions, stressing the need to avoid violence, misinformation, or actions that could undermine public order.
It reiterated its commitment to dialogue, accountability, and the protection of democratic values as it continues deliberations on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill.
