The Executive Chairman of Onuimo Local Government Area, Hon. Dr. Emeka Obi, has commended Imo State Governor, Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma, for what he described as remarkable developmental strides across the State, particularly in road infrastructure and urban renewal.
Speaking during activities marking Nigeria’s 2026 Democracy Day celebration, Obi said the Governor’s administration has significantly improved infrastructure and governance, leaving visible impacts across the three geopolitical zones of the State.
According to him, Democracy Day provides an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the nation’s democratic journey since the return to civilian rule in 1999.
“Democracy is government of the people, by the people and for the people. It remains the best form of governance because it gives citizens the opportunity to participate in decision-making and nation-building,” he said.
The award winning Council Chairman noted that although Nigeria’s democracy is still developing, considerable progress has been recorded over the years, particularly in technology, communication, infrastructure, and public awareness.
“From the advent of GSM technology to the expansion of information access and technological advancement, Nigerians have witnessed significant improvements in many aspects of life.
Our young people today are more informed and more aware of governance issues than ever before,” he stated.
Obi acknowledged the economic challenges currently facing Nigerians but expressed confidence that the reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration would yield positive results in the long run.
“Every meaningful transformation comes with sacrifices. While many Nigerians are feeling the impact of ongoing economic reforms, I believe these measures will ultimately benefit the country and create a stronger economy,” he said.
Assessing the performance of the current administration, Obi described both the Federal Government under President Tinubu and the Imo State Government under Governor Uzodimma as progressive and development-oriented.
“The APC-led government at the federal level has performed creditably. In Imo State, the achievements of Governor Hope Uzodimma are visible for all to see. There is a clear difference between what existed before and what we have today,” he said.
He highlighted several landmark projects executed by the Governor, including extensive road construction and rehabilitation across the State, as well as the construction of major infrastructure projects such as the flyover near Assumpta Cathedral in Owerri.
“Virtually every part of Imo State has benefited from the Governor’s interventions. Whether in Owerri, Orlu, or Okigwe zones, there are ongoing projects in road infrastructure, technology, urban renewal, and social development,” Obi added.
Speaking on developments in Onuimo Local Government Area, the Chairman said his administration has undertaken several projects aimed at improving the welfare of residents and strengthening local governance.
Among the projects listed were the fencing of the local government headquarters, rehabilitation of facilities damaged during the height of insecurity, maintenance of feeder roads, installation of solar-powered streetlights, and the provision of boreholes in various communities.
“Road infrastructure remains our greatest challenge. We continue to deploy available resources to maintain our roads, particularly during the rainy season. We have also installed solar streetlights in strategic public locations and provided water projects to improve the living conditions of our people,” he said.
Obi further noted that improved security across the area has contributed to economic and social stability.
“Insecurity has reduced drastically. Today, our people can sleep peacefully, and normal social and economic activities have resumed. These are part of the dividends of democracy being delivered by the APC administration,” he stated.
He added that the executive, legislative, and judicial arms of government at the local level are working harmoniously to ensure continued development and effective service delivery.
The Council Chairman reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to complementing the developmental efforts of both the state and federal governments while ensuring that residents continue to benefit from democratic governance.
