The All Progressives Congress (APC) Senatorial Candidate for Imo East Senatorial District (Owerri Zone), Prince Alex Mbata, has called for greater attention to the welfare of vulnerable citizens, stressing that the true essence of democracy lies in improving the lives of the less privileged.

Mbata made the call while congratulating the people of Owerri Zone, Imo State, and Nigerians on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

Speaking during an interactive session with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), the APC chieftain reaffirmed his commitment to advancing democratic values and providing quality representation for Owerri Zone if elected to the Senate in 2027.

He commended the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma for what he described as significant achievements in infrastructure development and people-oriented programmes across the State.

According to Mbata, the Governor’s strides in road construction, rural development, and other critical sectors have demonstrated purposeful leadership and set a benchmark for aspiring public office holders.

While describing Democracy Day as a moment of celebration, he noted that it should also serve as a period of reflection on pressing national challenges such as insecurity, economic hardship, and the rising cost of living.
“Democracy is not only about elections; it is also about collective responsibility and service to the people. Despite the challenges confronting our nation, we must remain hopeful and committed to building a better society. Positive change begins with each one of us,” he said.

Mbata urged citizens to continue supporting government policies and programmes aimed at fostering peace, stability, and sustainable development, adding that national progress can only be achieved through the collective efforts of both leaders and citizens.
“We must continue to pray for our leaders and support initiatives that promote peace and prosperity in our state and country. Development is a shared responsibility,” he added.

The Owerri Zone senatorial hopeful described himself as a passionate advocate of grassroots development, noting that he has consistently invested in programmes designed to empower communities and improve the living conditions of ordinary citizens.

He said his aspiration to represent Owerri Zone in the Senate is driven by a desire to attract more developmental projects, create opportunities for youths and women, and deepen democratic governance within the district.

Mbata also called for attitudinal change, patriotism, and a renewed commitment to nation-building among Nigerians.

Drawing from his experiences in organising empowerment programmes, he stressed the need to ensure that opportunities and intervention programmes reach their intended beneficiaries.
“It is unfair for privileged individuals to hijack benefits meant for the vulnerable. Development can only be meaningful when resources and opportunities reach those who genuinely need them,” he stated.

The APC stalwart further charged journalists to uphold the ethics of their profession by promoting truth, fairness, objectivity, and responsible journalism in the interest of democracy and national development.

He expressed optimism that the 2026 Democracy Day celebration would usher in greater peace, unity, and prosperity for Imo State and Nigeria.
“I remain committed to ensuring that the people of Owerri Zone enjoy the true dividends of democracy.
With the support of the people and by the grace of God, I will work tirelessly to justify their trust and provide effective representation in 2027,” Mbata said.
