According to a report from BBC, the incident occurred at a gas station in Roodepoort on Wednesday night, where criminals attempted to steal Fleurs’ car.
A spokesperson from the South African Police Service, Mavela Masondo, revealed that two armed individuals approached Fleurs, instructed him to exit his vehicle, and then shot him. Fleurs passed away from his injuries upon reaching the hospital.
One of the perpetrators fled with the vehicle, while authorities have yet to apprehend any suspects.
Fleurs, who was born in Cape Town, emerged from the Ubuntu Football Academy and previously played for SuperSport United.
Although he joined Chiefs after departing from SuperSport last season, he had not yet made his debut for the team.
In a statement, Kaizer Chiefs expressed profound sadness over Fleurs’ tragic death, extending condolences to his family and friends. The matter is currently under investigation by the South African Police Service, and further details will be provided in due course.
Kaiser Chiefs, on its website, praised Fleurs as an “elegant defender” with “remarkable technical skills.”
