Commuters were thrown into panic on Thursday morning when a moving train suffered a mechanical failure, causing one of its compartments to detach at the Ladipo section of the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

The incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. as the train, travelling from Ogba Ayo in Ogun State to Apapa in Lagos, experienced a sudden separation of its rear coach. The detachment caused confusion among passengers and disrupted traffic along the busy corridor.

Although no injuries or fatalities were reported, the incident halted movement for over 30 minutes and intensified congestion in the already traffic-prone Ladipo axis. Emergency responders arrived swiftly to manage the situation and clear the obstruction.

The cause of the malfunction has yet to be officially disclosed. However, the incident has renewed concerns about the safety and reliability of Nigeria’s rail infrastructure. Observers have called for urgent investigations and improved maintenance, particularly in high-density urban routes.

Transportation authorities are expected to issue a formal statement in the coming hours.
