LOUIS TRICHARDT, South Africa – October 13, 2025
A deadly bus crash in northern South Africa has claimed the lives of at least 42 people. Many of the victims were citizens of Zimbabwe and Malawi. The tragic accident took place along the N1 highway near Makhado (also known as Louis Trichardt) in Limpopo province, an area known for its mountainous terrain and dangerous road conditions.
The long-distance bus, operated by DNC Coaches, was traveling from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape to Zimbabwe. Several of the passengers were continuing their journey to Malawi. According to initial reports, the bus veered off the road on a steep mountain pass, plunged down an embankment, and overturned.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. Rescue efforts continued for several hours as crews worked to retrieve bodies and assist survivors. Among the victims was a ten-month-old baby, which officials say highlights the heartbreaking scale of the tragedy.
While the confirmed death toll stands at 42, dozens of others were injured. Several passengers remain in hospital in serious or critical condition. Authorities have warned that the number of fatalities may rise.
An investigation into the cause of the crash is underway. Early signs suggest that driver fatigue, mechanical failure, or the challenging road conditions may have contributed. Transport officials and forensic teams are examining the wreckage to determine exactly what happened.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa offered condolences to the affected families and neighboring countries. He described the incident as a regional tragedy and expressed solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe and Malawi.
Limpopo Premier Phophi Ramathuba visited the crash site and spoke with survivors. She assured the public that the provincial government would provide support to those affected and work with foreign embassies to assist with repatriation of the deceased.
Both the Zimbabwean and Malawian governments have confirmed the involvement of their citizens and are coordinating with South African authorities to identify the victims and provide support to families.
The bus company, DNC Coaches, released a statement expressing sorrow over the loss of life. The company has committed to cooperating fully with the investigation and offering assistance to the families of the victims.
This tragic event has raised concerns about road safety and long-distance travel in the region. Authorities across Southern Africa are facing renewed calls to enforce transport regulations and improve safety standards to prevent similar disasters in the future.
