The Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) office in the Yauri Local Government Area of Kebbi State faced an assault by unidentified individuals, authorities confirmed.
During the incident, which transpired on Thursday night, one officer sustained injuries, and there was significant property damage, including vehicles, as stated by the Command’s spokesperson, Mohammed Salisu.
According to the statement issued, “Late on Thursday, March 21, 2024, around 2310 hours, the combined team of Yauri outstation and surveillance received information about suspected smuggling activity at Yauri Waterside.”
“Upon reaching the location, 41 bags of foreign parboiled rice were confiscated, secured, and transported to the outstation,” the spokesperson disclosed.
Subsequently, “a violent attack ensued as aggrieved smugglers mobilized hoodlums to assault the outpost.”
“Upon detecting the mob, management promptly alerted the command and other allied agencies for reinforcement, which aided in quelling the unrest.”
“During the chaos, the Officer-in-Charge sustained a hand injury; an AK-47 rifle was stolen but later recovered; and 29 out of the 41 seized rice bags were taken by the assailants.”
“Additionally, the mob proceeded to vandalize the Officer-in-Charge’s personal vehicle, the outstation’s Air Conditioner, furniture, windows, doors, and other essential equipment crucial for supporting outpost operations.”
The spokesperson mentioned that Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, intervened to alleviate tension, following a meeting with the Customs Area Controller to chart a way forward.
Furthermore, tranquility has been restored since the incident.
“The Customs Area Controller, Iheanacho Ojike, maintained communication with the Commissioner of Police, resulting in several arrests and the initiation of an investigation to apprehend and prosecute the culprits,” he elaborated.
