The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cautioned former presidential candidate Peter Obi against politicising matters of governance, urging him to be more constructive in his criticisms.
Speaking during the commissioning of the newly constructed Edo Line Transport Terminal on Tuesday in Benin City, Wike accused the Labour Party flagbearer of “playing to the gallery” with his recent public remarks. While he did not directly reference a specific comment, his statement comes amid a series of Obi’s critiques of government projects and decisions, which Wike interpreted as attempts to score political points rather than engage in genuine dialogue about national development.
According to Wike, leadership and governance should be approached with sincerity and a sense of responsibility, not sensationalism. He emphasised that the delivery of infrastructure and services requires practical understanding, not just rhetoric.
“Enough of playing to the gallery in the name of politics,” Wike said. “When we are talking about governance, people should talk with experience. If you have nothing to offer, don’t politicise everything.”
The Edo Line terminal project, commissioned under the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki, is aimed at modernising public transportation in the state. Wike commended Obaseki for his developmental strides and called on other leaders to focus on delivering tangible results to the people.
