In a move aimed at strengthening internal security and expanding crime-fighting capacity nationwide, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed all Commissioners of Police to redeploy officers recently withdrawn from VIP protection duties to frontline anti-crime operations.

The directive, issued from the Police Force Headquarters, instructs Commissioners to take direct oversight of Special Protection Unit (SPU) formations within their commands and ensure that the affected officers are reassigned to core policing responsibilities. These include patrols, intelligence gathering, rapid response duties, and other operations designed to prevent and combat crime across communities.

The IGP also directed that proper supervision and retraining be provided where necessary to support effective performance in the officers’ new roles. Commissioners are required to submit detailed reports on the redeployment exercise to aid coordination and monitoring across the Force.

This action aligns with the Federal Government’s broader security reform agenda, which prioritizes public safety and efficient use of police manpower. By redirecting officers from VIP duties to operational policing, the Nigeria Police Force is increasing its presence at the community level and improving its capacity to respond to security challenges.

The Police leadership noted that the redeployment is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen public safety and improve policing outcomes across the country.
