The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency ( NDLEA) , Imo State Command , has enlightened the public against drug abuse ,as part of activities to commemorate United Nations Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking .
Addressing the gathering, during the event in Owerri, the Commandant General of NDLEA, Imo command , Abdullahi Saeed , noted that the celebration is an annual event set aside by the united nations to reveal achievements, past activities and new measures adopted , so as to achieve more success in the fight against drug menace .
Speaking on the theme of the year, ” The Evidence Is Clear ; Invest In Prevention” , commander Saeed , explained that , it pay more to prevent abuse of drugs than struggling to treat those already afflicted with it . He said that the this year’s drug day campaign recognizes that effective drug policies must be rooted in science , research , human rights , compassion and deep understanding of the social , economic and health implications of drug abuse .
The NDLEA boss , frowned on the level by which youths , particularly those in secondary schools and tertiary education embrace drug abuse . He maintained that this act must stop because it leads to crimes such as banditry , kidnapping , murder , suicide, rape , among others.
He hinted that war against drug abuse is a collective efforts since the society desire for a peaceful and secure nation. He said if it’s not stopped , it will lead to posterity
Commander Saeed , urged the Youths to shun drug abuse , he reminded them that they are future doctors , lawyers , Senators, governors, president ,
Finally, he appreciated the NDLEA Brigadier General , Buba Marawa retd , who he described as a war lord in fighting for drug abuse . He extended gratitude to Imo governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma for his supports to NDLEA, Imo State Command and it’s operation.
He also thanked the Nigeria Police Force , Federal Fire Service , Nigeria Immigration Service , Civil Societies among others.
The event featured lecturers , dramas by some secondary schools present , traditional dance among others.
