Senator Ezenwa Francis Onyewuchi, representing Imo East Senatorial District, has started the Health Insurance Scheme 2024 to help his constituents get better healthcare. The launch took place on August 1, 2024, at Rockview Hotels Owerri, with many important people from across Imo State attending, including elderly men and women facing health issues.
The event began with an opening speech from Rev. Fr. Prof. Wenceslaus Madu, the Vice Chancellor of Claretian University of Nigeria. Dr. Uchenna Ewelike, the Executive Secretary and CEO of the Imo State Health Insurance Agency, talked about how the health insurance would work.
Governor Hope Uzodimma, represented by the Imo Commissioner for Health and Social Services, Hon. Dr. Prosper Success Ohayagha, showed strong support for expanding health insurance in the state. Senator Onyewuchi emphasized the importance of making healthcare more accessible not just in Owerri Zone but throughout the state.
Representatives from the World Health Organization in Imo State praised the initiative. Healthcare providers and beneficiaries of the scheme also expressed their gratitude to Senator Onyewuchi for his efforts.
In his speech, Senator Onyewuchi urged other politicians in Owerri Zone to follow his example. He stated, “I am leading by example, not playing politics. I am here to fulfill my duty as a legislator and ensure my people have good health.” He encouraged the people of Imo State, especially those in Owerri Zone, to enroll in the free health insurance scheme.
Senator Onyewuchi also announced a grant of ₦100,000 to help small traders in the zone. He promised to continue enrolling more people into the health insurance scheme, ensuring no one dies due to a lack of funds for medical treatment. He highlighted the partnership with Imo State Microfinance Bank to manage the financial aspects of the grant.
During a media chat, Senator Onyewuchi expressed his satisfaction with the achievements of the APC at both state and national levels. He praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for establishing the South East Development Commission, which he believes will boost infrastructure and job creation in the region.
Addressing the ongoing #ENDBADGOVERNANCEPROTEST, Senator Onyewuchi advised the youth in the South East to stay away from the protests and avoid violence. He urged the people of Imo State, especially the youth in Owerri Zone, to remain peaceful and support the growth and peace of the state under Governor Uzodimma’s leadership, who he described as a governor who genuinely cares for his people.
