The Imo State House of Assembly (IMHA) has taken a bold step to elevate the quality of education within the state by proposing a motion to close down all unapproved private primary and secondary schools operating across its 27 local government areas.

This important move aims to ensure that only schools meeting the state’s stringent educational standards are allowed to continue operating, thus preserving the integrity and credibility of the state’s education system.

The rapid proliferation of unregulated private schools has become a significant concern, as these institutions often fail to adhere to proper academic guidelines and employ inadequately qualified teachers. This trend endangers the future of students by subjecting them to inferior education, jeopardizing their academic and professional prospects.

Through this motion, the IMHA is working to safeguard the interests of students, ensuring that they receive a high-quality education that equips them for future success. The proposal demonstrates the House’s commitment to strengthening Imo State’s educational system by demanding strict compliance with government regulations and high standards.

The motion calls on the Ministry of Education to take immediate steps to monitor and identify unapproved schools, enforce the closure of those operating illegally, and ensure that all educational institutions adhere to the state’s established guidelines.

Presented by Hon. Obinna Egu, who represents the Ngor-Okpala State Constituency, the motion received overwhelming support from other lawmakers. Among the prominent supporters were the Majority Leader, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, representing Owerri West State Constituency, and several other key figures, including Hon. Innocent Ikpamezie from Mbaitoli, Rt. Hon. Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu of Nwangele, Hon. James Esile Ubah of Onuimo, Hon. Ernest Okechukwu Udeze of Ideato North, Hon. Chigozie Nwaneri of Oru-East, and Hon. Worship Ebonine of Njaba.

The Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe, recognized the importance of the motion and urged swift action to enforce it, reflecting the House’s collective commitment to ensuring that educational standards in Imo State are rigorously maintained and upheld.
