Incarceration typically refers to the legal process of imprisoning an individual as a punishment or while awaiting trial.
However, in the case of Nonsonkwa, a well-known Imo-based journalist and radio personality, his imprisonment seems to raise more questions than answers.
Allegedly involved in cyberstalking, character assassination and others by the Shared Prosperity Administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma, Nonsonkwa has found himself incarcerated by the government of the day in the state.
This situation has left many citizens wondering about the silence of influential leaders from Owerri Zone Extraction of the state, especially his native Mbaitoli and Ikeduru localities, given their ties and closeness to the Governor.
Nonsonkwa hails from Umunoha in Mbaitoli Local Government Area (LGA), which is also the home of Prince Marcon Nlemigbo, the apex leader of the area, and the Imo Deputy Governor, Lady Chinyere Ekomaru, who is Nonsonkwa’s immediate relative.
Prince Marcon, a key ally and supporter of Governor Hope Uzodimma, is widely regarded as a respected figure in both his community and the state.
However, his silence on the matter of Nonsonkwa’s incarceration has sparked concern among the people of Mbaitoli, who are now questioning why their leader has not intervened on behalf of his own kinsman.
Given the close relationship between Prince Marcon and Governor Uzodimma, many had expected him to use his influence to secure the release of Nonsonkwa.
The general sentiment in Mbaitoli is that, since Nonsonkwa is considered a son of the soil from Mbaitoli, it is only the Governor who has the authority to forgive and grant him a pardon.
This expectation is further compounded by the fact that Prince Marcon is known for his calm demeanor and reputation for promoting peace, traits that many hoped would compel him to speak up on behalf of his brother from the same area.
Beyond Prince Marcon, other prominent figures from the Mbaitoli-Ikeduru axis, such as Prince Charles Amadi (also known as Charlvon), should also be advocating for Nonsonkwa’s release.
Like Prince Marcon, Prince Charles is aligned with the All Progressives Congress (APC) and has significant influence within the region.
As key stakeholders from the MbaIke region (a combined reference to Mbaitoli and Ikeduru), it is crucial for both leaders to unite and approach Governor Uzodimma to seek clemency for Nonsonkwa.
It is worth noting that Nonsonkwa was also a political candidate in the last general elections, where he contested to represent MbaIke in the Federal House of Representatives.
Though he was unsuccessful, the election saw the emergence of Hon. Akarachi Amadi, the son of Prince Charles Amadi, as the representative of MbaIke.
This adds another layer of responsibility for the leaders of the region to rally behind Nonsonkwa, who is not only a local figure but also a former candidate in the race for political representation.
The people of Mbaitoli and Ikeduru are growing increasingly impatient with the lack of action from their leaders.
The community is calling for a united front, urging Prince Marcon Nlemigbo, Prince Charles Amadi, and even Hon. Akarachi Amadi to intervene on behalf of Nonsonkwa.
Their collective efforts could be pivotal in securing his release, as the people believe that the Governor will be more likely to respond positively if the request is made by these influential figures.
It has now been over 30 days since Nonsonkwa’s arrest, and his case has yet to be resolved. On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, the State Magistrate Court in Owerri was expected to grant Nonsonkwa bail, but the case has been adjourned until November 19-20, 2024.
This delay is causing growing frustration among his supporters, as they believe that a simple statement or opinion should not result in prolonged detention.
Of particular concern is the fact that Nonsonkwa’s arrest stems from his comments regarding the relocation of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from Northern Nigeria to Ehime-Mbano LGA in Imo State.
This statement was first broadcast by Arise Television before Nonsonkwa echoed the report.
If Nonsonkwa can be arrested for merely relaying information that was already publicly disseminated by a major news outlet, many are asking why the journalists at Arise Television, who initially aired the report, are not facing similar charges.
The situation is quickly becoming a test of the values of justice, fairness, and leadership in Imo State.
The people of Mbaitoli and Ikeduru, along with their political leaders, must rise to the occasion and demand justice for Nonsonkwa.
Silence or inaction will not only harm the people of Mbaitoli and Ikeduru but could also set a dangerous precedent for the treatment of journalists and citizens who speak out on public matters.
In conclusion, it is time for Prince Marcon Nlemigbo, Prince Charles Amadi (Charlvon), and Hon. Akarachi Amadi to take bold action in securing the release of Nonsonkwa.
They owe it to their people and to the ideals of justice to use their influence and ensure that the rights of their fellow citizens are protected.
Only through collective efforts can the people of Mbaitoli and Ikeduru hope to bring about the release of their son and ensure that such injustices are not repeated.
The leaders mentioned earlier, as well as those from Owerri Zone and MbaIke in particular who were not specifically referenced, should approach the Governor solely with the purpose of pleading for assistance.
Their mission should be one of humble appeal, seeking the Governor’s intervention or support.
In this context, the focus should remain on diplomacy and respectful negotiation, as they look to address pressing issues affecting their communities.
It is important that they present their case with clarity, unity, and purpose, ensuring that their collective voice resonates with the Governor in the pursuit of their common goals.
Once Nonsonkwa is released into their care, they will have the power and authority to guide and counsel him.
Their role will be to advise him to remain objective and focused on the principles of investigative journalism, especially in his capacity as a radio champion.
They should emphasize the importance of impartiality and thorough, fact-based reporting, ensuring that he continues to serve as a responsible and credible voice in the media.
