Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has declared that Nigeria is currently in a state of bondage under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, citing worsening insecurity, economic hardship, and tribalized politics as signs of national decline.
Obasanjo made the statement during a meeting with leaders of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) from the southern region, who visited his Abeokuta residence as part of consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He warned that Nigeria is drifting due to the absence of a truly national leader — one who places unity and the common good above ethnic or sectional interests. According to him, the country has had leaders from various ethnic groups, but has yet to experience a president who represents the entire nation equally.
Obasanjo expressed disappointment with the current political class, accusing many of pursuing selfish agendas rather than working for the progress of the country. He urged citizens, especially the youth, to remain vigilant, engage in the democratic process, and hold leaders accountable.
Rejecting any association with political parties, Obasanjo emphasized that his loyalty lies solely with Nigeria and its future, not with any political platform.
NNPP leaders at the meeting echoed Obasanjo’s concerns. Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi Oguntoyinbo, the party’s 2023 governorship candidate in Ogun State, described the political atmosphere as frustrating and called for people-oriented leadership. He stated that Nigerian youth are organizing to play a more active role in the 2027 elections.
NNPP Southwest Vice Chairman, Chief Ademola Ayoade, said the party visited Obasanjo to seek his advice and blessing as they prepare for national leadership. He dismissed reports of an alliance with any other political party and denied rumors of the defection of NNPP national leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
