Felix Ukpo, father of David Nwamini Ukpo, the young man at the center of the UK’s high-profile organ trafficking case involving former Nigerian Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has died in Ebonyi State.
Mr. Ukpo passed away on Sunday afternoon, according to his other son, Boniface, who said the death was caused by years of emotional distress over David’s ordeal. The family said they have not spoken to David since 2022, when the case began, and his whereabouts remain unknown.
In 2022, UK authorities arrested Mr. Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and a medical doctor for trafficking David to Britain to harvest his kidney for their sick daughter. In March 2023, the three were convicted and sentenced to prison under the UK’s Modern Slavery Act.
The Ukpo family say the tragedy left Felix in declining health, and he died without seeing or hearing from his son again.
