Governor Dikko Umaru Radda of Katsina State has approved ₦20 million for each of the state’s 34 local government areas to renovate public graveyards, totaling ₦680 million. The initiative aims to improve the condition of cemeteries and is seen as both a humanitarian and spiritual effort.
The announcement was made during a meeting with traditional rulers from the Katsina and Daura Emirates. Governor Radda said the move reflects respect for the dead and seeks divine blessings for the state.
Alongside this, the governor introduced a welfare package for traditional and religious leaders. District heads will now earn salaries equivalent to Grade Level 16, while over 6,600 ward heads, 3,000 Imams, and mosque cleaners across the state will receive regular stipends.
In the area of security, more than 1,500 youths have been trained, equipped, and deployed to assist in community policing. Governor Radda called on traditional leaders to continue supporting government efforts to ensure peace and stability.
The graveyard renovation project has been welcomed by many residents, though some have called for transparency in how the funds will be used at the local level.
